Lecture Question

  7. Simple density calculate ও scale dependence interpret করতে পারবে।

Big Picture

1. Population

2. Population size

1 hectare pond-এ 1000 fish এবং 100 hectare lake-এ 1000 fish ecologicalভাবে same নয়। তাই density important।

3. Population density

Density = unit area বা volume-এ individual number।

\[ D=\frac{N}{A} \]

Density competition, encounter rate, disease transmission, mating probability, resource depletion এবং predator attraction influence করতে পারে।

4. Crude density ও ecological density

Crude density total geographic area ব্যবহার করে। Ecological density actual usable habitat area ব্যবহার করে।

200 deer 10 km² reserve-এ থাকলে crude density = 20 deer/km²। যদি usable forest 4 km² হয়, ecological density = 50 deer/km² usable habitat।

5. Relative abundance ও index

6. Occupancy

Occupancy = sampled site-এর কত proportion-এ species detected।

7. Spatial dispersion

CLUMPED UNIFORM RANDOM
** *** * * * * ** *
  ** * * * * *
     **** * * * ** *

Pattern scale-dependent।

8. Clumped dispersion

Clumping common

  • patchy resource,
  • social behaviour,
  • parent-এর কাছে reproduction,
  • limited dispersal,
  • shelter concentration,
  • environmental heterogeneity।

Fish school, herd, mussel bed, suitable microsite-এর seedling examples।

9. Uniform dispersion

Territoriality, interference competition, allelopathy বা regular human planting more-even spacing তৈরি করতে পারে।

Perfect mathematical uniformity rare; pattern randomness-এর তুলনায় বেশি even।

10. Random dispersion

11. Scale dependence

12. Age structure

Population-এর different age class proportion age structure।

Simple classes:

  • pre-reproductive,
  • reproductive,
  • post-reproductive।

13. Sex ratio

Male ও female relative abundance sex ratio।

Mating system অনুযায়ী effect change করে। Monogamous population-এ imbalance pairing reduce করতে পারে; polygynous system-এ few males many females fertilize করতে পারে।

14. Census বনাম sample

Census every individual count করার চেষ্টা। Small/enclosed/conspicuous population-এ possible।

Sample subset count করে larger population estimate। Method organism অনুযায়ী select করতে হয়: quadrat, transect, camera trap, acoustic survey, mark–recapture ইত্যাদি।

15. Detectability

Observed count true abundance + detection probability দ্বারা affected।

Dense vegetation, observer skill, time of day detection change করে।

Observed count ≠ automatically true abundance

Concept Diagram ও Flow

Dispersion patterns

Worked Ecological Examples

Tree seedling

Mosquito larva

City-wide total count-এর চেয়ে container type অনুযায়ী density/occupancy বেশি informative।

Wetland bird

Water level change detection probability কমালে apparent decline true population decline নাও হতে পারে।

Quantitative / Analytical Skill

Worked density: 60 m² sampled habitat-এ 240 snail পাওয়া গেলে density = 240/60 = 4 snail m⁻²। Landscape-এর only half suitable হলে crude ও ecological density differ করবে।

Bangladesh Context

Hilsa, deer, wetland bird, mosquito, crop pest, pond fish ও urban wildlife population concept দিয়ে study করা যায়। Monsoon-driven habitat-এ sampling ও detectability season অনুযায়ী বদলায়।

Graph / Table কীভাবে Interpret করবে

4. possible ecological mechanism propose
        ↓
5. alternative explanation consider

Increase, decrease, optimum, threshold, time lag, treatment difference, density dependence—এই patternগুলো চিনতে practice করতে হবে।

Comparison Table: Population Descriptor

Measure
Size (N) total individual crowding per area
Density area/volume প্রতি number spatial arrangement
Dispersion arrangement total abundance
Occupancy কত site used occupied site-এ কত individual
Age structure demographic composition exact future growth একা predict করে না

Mini Sampling Exercise

Random coordinate দিয়ে ten 1 m² quadrat place করো। Plant/burrow count করো।

Model Explanation Paragraph

Evidence ও Study Design

  3. Independent replication

  • Population size ও density same নয়।
  • Random dispersion মানে random movement নয়।
  • Occupancy ও abundance আলাদা।
  • Observed count true population size
